Qapital App Review
I love spending money. Literally whenever I'm asked to list my hobbies, shopping is #1, followed by beer, and trying on glitter. I wish I was saying that for effect, but it couldn't be more accurate.
My problem is that I'll spend $150 at Sephora on skincare and highlighter, but the thought of putting $150 into a savings account sounds impossible, not to mention SUPER boring. Sorry gals, I can't come to dinner tonight because I put $150 in my savings account earlier today so I'm just gonna stay in...alone...and drink cooking sherry in my bathrobe.
So my pal told me about Qapital which is kind of a set-it-and-forget it money saving app. Let's dig in.

What is it?
Qapital is a new way to bank that lets you save for the things you want, just by doing the things you do. Finally, saving is effortless, motivating, and even a little fun.
It securely connects to your bank account and saves automatically for you, essentially behind-the-scenes.
How it Works
Pick a goal. Any goal.
Saving “just because” is hard. That’s why Qapital uses real life goals instead of generic accounts — so you can stay motivated, track your progress, and celebrate success.
- Vacation
- A new car
- Sexy new shoes
- A big dog
Set up a savings “Rule”
Customize and automate your savings using "Rules". Rules turn the stuff you do every day into savings for your goals.
- Select an amount to round up on all your purchases
- Save $ whenever you go to the gym
- Guilty Pleasure - Save $ whenever you do something naughty
- Save $ every week on Sunday
- Create your own
Get the app and start saving
Before you know it, you’ll be sporting those new shades, paying off your debt, or boarding that plane.
My Approach
I arbitrarily set up a savings account called "Ya$$ Mama" (feel free to use that) with the goal of savings $4,000. I don't have anything in particular I'm saving for but I know at SOME point I'll want to buy a car because I can-NAWT commute in Chicago an-yee-more. So I figure if I can save $4k, that's a super sexy start. But if it turns into moving expenses for a relocation to California, well that's great too.
On April 8th, I kickstarted things with $50 transfer into my account and set up a few rules:
- Round-up
- Every time I make a purchase, Qapital rounds the purchase up to the nearest increment of $2, and saves the difference.
- A purchase for $.82 will result in a savings amount of $1.18
- You can select increments of $1-5
- Every time I make a purchase, Qapital rounds the purchase up to the nearest increment of $2, and saves the difference.
- 52 Week Rule
- Save $1 on week 1, $2 on week 2 (and so on) for 52 weeks to save $1,378.
- Guilty Pleasure Rule
- Every time I go to my favorite bar, I save $5
Thots & Results
I really can't say enough about the app. It's crazy to think that, at one time or another, folks had all sorts of change and they either saved it up in an old holiday popcorn tin (you did it... I know it.) or just let it get lost in the bottom of a purse, the floorboards of you car, or your washing machine.
At this point, I have over $1700 saved and I only actively made a single deposit. The app almost makes saving money a game and for that, I'm grateful.
Huge heart on for Qapital. Give her a go and see how much you can tuck away. Maybe we can all take a vacation together... or I can finally put a down-payment on a car. It's cold as hell in Chicago right now so Mexico is sounding reeeeeal nice.
UPDATE
In January 2018, I was laid off from my day job. In the grand scheme of things, I'm to upset about it because after a company "acquisition" (we got bought out) I ended up hating my life for 32 hours a week...
BUT... because of Qapital, I had over $1700 sitting in an account that proven amazingly valuable when I was given the news about my position being eliminated. I was already a fan of the app, but having over $1500 extra to utilize for bills and such that I'd never have been able to pay on my unemployment salary... amazing.
Qapital saved my ass and there's not really any other way to put it. Don't wait around to start saving money until something sh!tty happens. You'll be super grateful in the event of an emergency.
