I’ve named my home The Rainbow Room. I don’t remember why or when, exactly, but I knew if I bought it, that was her name. The walls (at this point) are pretty ordinary, to be honest; grayish-blue and greenish-beige?
When I started looking for places I had a few non-negotiables; top floor of a 3-5 story building, lots of light and a nice laundry facility. After midday in my last building, my apartment was dark, but this Chicago vintage has east and west-facing windows so all day long, I get direct and indirect light.
My first thought was rainbow film, but I have a difficult time believing any of them are worth a damn because it’s $45 one place, $15 in another, but they all somehow look exactly the same? I went a different route to add some color to my pre-painted walls; a crystal sun catcher.
This is some retro sh*t for me. My Grammaw had crystal animals in a cabinet in her living room when I was growing up, and one of these dangly things hanging from the rearview mirror in her Cadillac. Rainbows in the car? I’m sure you can imagine how enamored I was with that. Sparkles and a baby gay? Get outta’ here.
This thing was 10 bucks, which I thought was kind of high, but it’s strung on a decent chain and ready to hang. Grammaw’s was on a piece of fishing line. I also thought it low-key looked semi-vaginal which–depending on who you are–could be a positive or negative characteristic. But come on, check out how pretty this thing is. I woke up the first day to about 30-40 little bouncing rainbows on wall and I’m pretty sure, audibly laughed. Mornings are tough for me so what a nice little way to say “Hello,” to 8am. Look at this rainbow hanging out on my fireplace:

The flare and distorted color in this image is actually caused by the sun catcher. It looks like a little ghost!
Long story short, I want one for every window. Can you imagine? I have 4 windows in my living room, one in my kitchen, one in my bedroom, and 2 in my dining room. Rainbows all day, Honey.
In all honesty, it’s simple fun and not something you see everywhere or everyday. It’s whimsical bohemian-quirkiness with just a little bit of science. Sometimes simple things like these can add that little extra somethin’-somethin’ and if it makes you smile? Worth it. Oh, you can also take a picture like this one and tell your friends the refraction flare is real and what makes all the blacks in the image look blue. That’s actually what happened which I think is prettty solid.
I have 4/5 HEARTS on for this Crystal Sun Catcher because I think it’s great but kind of expensive for a single one. BUT… it is on a decent quality, long chain and ready to hang on a window, hook, etc. I also found different sizes and colors on Amazon as well as a double pack of this vaginal one for only $15.
